Tony Award-winning actor Jonathan Groff is set to return to Broadway, starring as the ’50s and ’60s singer-songwriter Bobby Darin in the world premiere of Just in Time. This new musical will begin previews on March 28, 2025, at the Circle in the Square Theatre, with an official opening on April 23.
Directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!, Beetlejuice), the show will be the latest in a string of boundary-pushing projects for Groff. Speaking about the role, Groff said, “Bobby Darin was a supernova. His enormous talent, charisma, and pure genius were most on display when he was letting it rip in front of a crowd. This primal, passionate love affair he had with the audience was the inspiration for our show.”
The musical features a book by Tony winner Warren Leight (Side Man) and Isaac Oliver (Intimacy Idiot), with choreography by Shannon Lewis and music supervision by Andrew Resnick. It is based on an original concept by Ted Chapin. Groff, who also serves as a producer on the project, is collaborating closely with Timbers to bring this vibrant production to life.
Groff’s return to Broadway follows his Tony-winning performance in Merrily We Roll Along, and his previous nominations for Hamilton and Spring Awakening. He’s also known for his television roles in Mindhunter and Glee, as well as for voicing Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen films.
Producers Tom Kirdahy, Robert Ahrens, and John Frost expressed their excitement, stating, “We are honored to celebrate the legacy of the great Bobby Darin with the inimitable Jonathan Groff under the visionary direction of Alex Timbers. Just in Time indeed!”
With Groff’s dynamic talent and Timbers’ visionary direction, Just in Time promises to be an unforgettable Broadway experience, celebrating the life and music of a once-in-a-lifetime talent.
