StageLync Podcast Ep. 80: Tammy Honesty on Scenic Design, Teaching, and the Fake Food Cookbook

In this episode of the StageLync Podcast, I speak with Tammy Honesty, Associate Professor of Scenic Design at West Virginia University’s School of Theatre & Dance, about a career shaped by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep commitment to education. Tammy traces her path from an early fascination with theatre—sparked by seeing South Pacific as a sixth grader—to a professional life that bridges scenic design, teaching, and leadership within the field.

Our conversation explores how hands-on making led Tammy from the stage to the shop, how mentorship and professional networks—particularly through USITT—played a crucial role in her development, and why she believes staying actively engaged in the industry is essential for effective teaching. We also discuss her work as co-author of the Fake Food Cookbook series, a highly practical and collaborative resource for props artisans that reflects the generosity and knowledge-sharing culture at the heart of technical theatre.
