Shaping the Future of Performing Arts at HKPax 2024

October 2024 is set to be a milestone month for the performing arts in Hong Kong with the highly anticipated inagural  Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo (HKPax) and the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (HKAPA) PerformTech Symposium 2024. Both events will run from between October 14th and 18th,  offering a unique intersection of creativity and technology that will redefine the boundaries of art.

As the Hong Kong Arts Development Council announced, HKPax will spotlight the city’s growing reputation as an international arts hub. Over five days, the expo will present a rich program of music, dance, drama, and exhibitions. Its goal? To build a global platform for collaboration and creativity, where artists from different parts of the world can exchange ideas and explore new partnerships.

The event will be divided into seven segments, offering different entry points for artists and audiences. While the Expo program will shine a light on well-known Hong Kong-based artists, International Showcases will bring talent from various countries into the limelight. Venues like the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong City Hall, and Kwai Tsing Theatre will host performances, talks, and exhibitions that aim to connect the city’s artistic pulse to global currents.

One of the main attractions of HKPax is its focus on helping artists engage in pitch sessions to discover potential collaborations and projects. Additionally, prominent art leaders, such as Tisa Ho and Kenneth Fok, will be part of an advisory panel supporting the event. According to Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the time is ripe for Hong Kong to establish its own performing arts expo as part of its growing cultural influence. The hope is to enhance connections within the Greater Bay Area and extend Hong Kong’s creative reach globally.

The HKAPA PerformTech Symposium is an exciting counterpart to the HKPax, presenting a thought-provoking exploration of how the digital age is reshaping the world of performing arts. Presented by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, this three-day event will bring together international experts to discuss the impact of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence on theater, scenography, film, and performance education.

Attendees will experience innovative performances that blend technology with traditional forms, creating entirely new modes of artistic expression. The symposium will also provide an opportunity for young artists and students to showcase their work, emphasizing the power of technology to transcend conventional norms in art.

With an emphasis on the synergy between technology and creative expression, the PerformTech Symposium aims to prepare the next generation of artists and practitioners to harness the opportunities of a digital future. The fusion of AI, machine learning, and performing arts is just the beginning of a transformative period for the field.

StageLync, CEO, Anna Robb has been invited as a guest speaker at the PerformTech Symposium, where she will provide key insights into the role of technology in modern performance art.
