Five Minutes That Pay: A Book Excerpt on Creating Circus Acts

Written by Iaroslava Slonova, this inspiring book draws on years of practical experience creating, performing, and directing circus acts. It offers artists thoughtful insights and creative tools to develop original, memorable performances while exploring the artistry, storytelling, and imagination behind the circus.

About the Book

This book is an inspiring guide to creating circus and variety acts.

It brings together reflections on act structure, real-life examples from performers, their sources of inspiration, and what truly captivates an audience.

I share observations, advice, links to performances, and an analysis of circus art as a whole.

The book also includes a curated music collection for acts, illustrations, practical examples, and special directing exercises designed to expand imagination.

It’s not a strict textbook, but rather a creative companion — a motivational collection of ideas and notes meant to spark your own artistic journey, even without major resources.

The book also explores the basics of scriptwriting and directing, offering ideas for creating art content, stories, and stage performances.

Featured Chapter: Illogical Associations and Archetypes

I would like to feature the chapter on illogical associations and archetypes. It introduces a creative wheel of archetypes, character types, and personalities, and shows how unexpected combinations can generate original characters and fresh ideas for circus acts.

FIVE MINUTES THAT PAY

Excerpt(first page)

Five minutes…

The artist’s whole life is on stage.

On average, a variety show or circus act lasts about five minutes. But those few minutes encapsulate an entire story—the journey that the artist has been on for years. Childhood, training, falls, and victories—all of this is compressed into a short, vivid moment when spectators forget who they are and move into another world.

There are no random movements here: every gesture, every glance, and every trick becomes part of a story that the artist tells without words, but in such a way that it is impossible to forget.

A circus act is a short but complete form of performing art that can take the audience away from their everyday lives. For a few minutes, people forget about their problems, change their mindset, and breathe differently. This is the power of art.

The artist becomes a mediator between the audience and their inner world. In this sense, they can be called “doctors of the soul”—not metaphorically, but functionally.

Therefore, we can say that art plays an important role: if we feel bad, it heals us. If we feel good, it makes the moment unforgettable.
