Wake Up Call for Inclusion 01 – Institutional Barriers and Individual Biases in the Performing Arts

Wake Up Call For Inclusion is a series of panel discussions about systematic obstacles people of color face in the performing arts. This series was born as CircusTalk’s response to the equality crisis that spreads beyond the borders of the United States. During this series, we meet with artists and administrators to hear their personal experiences and perspectives, as well as their hopes and recommendations for change.

For some within the circus industry, such a subject matter might sound strange, as the narrative of the circus industry is one of renowned diversity. In fact, many would even say, among all entertainment genres, no other has been a greater beacon for welcoming men and women of every stripe, gender, tongue, culture and ability like the circus. However, what you see isn’t always what you get; and diversity doesn’t necessarily translate to inclusion. Therefore, the diversity of bodies and talents in the circus industry, also boast a diversity of unique experiences, some of which might not corroborate the popular belief about life under the Big Top.

The first episode of Wake Up Call for Inclusion is an intimate conversation with circus artists of color about their personal experiences in the industry.
