“The Greatest Showman” Comes to The Stage

In an exciting announcement that has thrilled fans worldwide, Disney has revealed that “The Greatest Showman” will soon be coming to the stage as a full-fledged musical. The news broke during the 2024 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, where Disney showcased its impressive lineup of upcoming theatrical productions, including this highly anticipated adaptation.

The announcement took place during Disney’s D23 Expo, a prestigious event known for unveiling major projects across the Disney universe. The audience was treated to a surprise performance that kicked off with a medley from Disney’s existing stage hits like “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Frozen.” The real excitement, however, began when the unmistakable tune of “The Greatest Show” from the 2017 film echoed through the arena.

Ryan Vasquez, known for his role in “The Notebook” on Broadway, appeared on stage dressed as P.T. Barnum, the iconic character portrayed by Hugh Jackman in the film. Joined by four other cast members, Vasquez delivered a powerful rendition of “The Greatest Show,” complete with dynamic choreography and dazzling costumes. Above them, a sign read, “The Greatest Showman: The New Musical,” confirming that the beloved film is officially being adapted for the stage.

This announcement marks another milestone for Disney Theatrical Productions, a division that has brought countless iconic films to life on Broadway. “The Greatest Showman” will be the first 20th Century Fox film to be adapted by Disney since the media giant acquired Fox in 2019. Disney Theatrical is no stranger to success on the stage, with hits like “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” still drawing crowds after years of performances.

“The Greatest Showman,” which became a cultural phenomenon upon its release, grossed over $435 million worldwide and captured the hearts of audiences with its vibrant storytelling and unforgettable soundtrack. Songs like “This Is Me,” “A Million Dreams,” and “Rewrite the Stars” have become anthems, resonating with fans of all ages.

While details about the creative team and cast for the stage adaptation have yet to be revealed, the original film’s composers, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, were recently spotted in London. The duo, who also penned the music for “Dear Evan Hansen” and “A Christmas Story,” are expected to play a significant role in bringing “The Greatest Showman” to the stage.

As anticipation builds, fans can look forward to a stage show that captures the magic, energy, and spectacle that made the film such a beloved hit. With Disney’s track record of translating its cinematic successes to the stage, “The Greatest Showman” musical is poised to be a must-see event for theatergoers everywhere.
