Cornell Freeney: The Unity Circus Project

On this episode of the Circuspreneur Podcast, host Shenea Stiletto  interviews German Wheel artist and founder of the social circus organization Unity Circus Project in Las Vegas, Cornell Freeney. Cornell was introduced to the Circus Arts via CircEsteem & The Chicago Youth Circus. He is a former competitor and individual category medal recipient in the World Championships in Wheel Gymnastics, and was also a 4 time Gold medalist on the National Competitive level. As a pro Circus Artist, Cornell is a seasoned Halftime Circuit Performer, and uniquely performs with his German Wheel on ice in productions around the world.

How did you transition from competitive gymnastics and tumbling to circus arts?

Cornell began his journey with gymnastics as a teenager after being introduced to a tumbling team in Chicago. Although starting late at age 13, his interest was sparked by the flips and dynamic movements. He initially pursued gymnastics competitively but found a more fulfilling path when introduced to circus arts. Joining a local circus program provided him a positive outlet, keeping him engaged and away from negative influences. Over time, he discovered his passion for the German Wheel after being inspired by Wolfgang Bensel, a German coach who introduced him to the apparatus. Circus arts not only allowed him to grow as an athlete but also gave him a community to thrive in.

What motivated you to start The Unity Circus Project in Las Vegas?

Cornell’s inspiration comes from his personal experience with the transformative power of circus arts. Growing up in Chicago, access to a community circus program opened numerous doors for him, helping him avoid trouble and find a sense of belonging. With The Unity Circus Project, Cornell aims to replicate that opportunity for underprivileged youth in Las Vegas. He emphasizes accessibility, inclusivity, and the ability of circus arts to foster personal growth, resilience, and confidence among participants.

How does performing halftime shows compare to competing in German Wheel gymnastics?

Cornell describes halftime performances as high-energy, short-form showcases that require engaging large audiences in a short amount of time. While competitions focus on technical precision and judged routines, performances allow for more creativity and connection with the audience. Performing for teams like the Chicago Bulls is especially meaningful to Cornell, who grew up in the city. Despite the differences, his competitive background enhances his skills and precision in performances, making him a standout performer in the halftime circuit.

What are the unique challenges and opportunities in growing a social circus in Las Vegas?

Cornell notes that while Las Vegas is a hub for entertainment and circus arts, many local youth have little access to these programs due to financial and geographical barriers. He identified space and funding as significant challenges in establishing The Unity Circus Project. To address this, he created a mobile program, partnering with spaces like the YMCA to bring circus arts directly to underserved communities. The perception of circus in Vegas, closely tied to world-renowned shows like Cirque du Soleil, makes it easier to introduce the concept but also sets high expectations.

Do you think German Wheel gymnastics could become an Olympic sport, and would you compete if it did?

Cornell highlights ongoing efforts within the German Wheel community to achieve Olympic recognition, led by pioneers like Wolfgang Bensel. The sport is gaining international participation, which is crucial for Olympic inclusion. While Cornell has stepped away from competition to focus on performing and coaching, he admits that the prospect of German Wheel becoming an Olympic sport would likely draw him back to compete, even if only for a participation trophy against the next generation of highly skilled athletes.
