Compañía de Circo “eia” to the Max!

Compañía de Circo “eia” has received a Max award (named after Max Estrella the protaganist of Bohemian Lights) for their show InTarsi, which is wonderful news for them, but also for the international circus community! There are 23 categories for the Max awards, including three special awards and it is the first time a contemporary circus company has won such an award, according to Compañía de Circo “eia”’s jubilant announcement. The award they received was in the special category section called Outstanding New Show.

They explain how the Max awards are equivalent to Spain’s Tony awards and that each year Max awards prizes to the best in Spanish theater, dance, musicals and up until 2002, circus. At that time, the awards were given to traditional circuses, but in 2002 the circus category was removed. Compañía de Circo “eia”  is understandably excited to receive the honor of best new show because it transcends all genres of show. For the broader circus community, this is a sure sign to other institutions that circus is being understood worldwide to be a valid art form, and will hopefully  inspire future generations of circus artists in Spain. Could it lead to the reinstatement of a circus category for Max awards? Tune in next year to see. Meanwhile, congratulations to the cast and crew of Compañía de Circo “eia”!
