Benoit Mathieu Appointed Co-General of TOHU

TOHU, Canada’s leading performing arts organization for the circus arts, announced today the appointment of Benoit Mathieu as Co-General and Administrative Director. Having begun his role progressively since December, Mathieu is already working closely with Pascale Bélanger, Interim Co-General Director of Programming.

Following the announcement of Stéphane Lavoie’s departure a few weeks ago, TOHU’s Board of Directors adopted a co-leadership model, dividing responsibilities between administration and programming. TOHU extends its gratitude to Vanessa Bavière, who served as Interim Co-Administrative Director, ensuring a smooth transition until Mathieu’s arrival.

Mathieu’s candidacy stood out due to his exceptional experience and strategic vision, aligning perfectly with TOHU’s current challenges and opportunities.

With over 30 years of experience in the cultural sector, Benoit Mathieu brings a wealth of expertise across various domains of the performing arts. His career reflects a deep understanding of creative processes and a collaborative approach with designers and business partners.

His involvement in major projects, both in Quebec and internationally, and his experience in cultural infrastructure and team management establish him as a leading figure in the cultural field. His distinguished tenure at Cirque du Soleil, where he held diverse roles, has provided him with invaluable insights into the circus ecosystem—a crucial asset for advancing TOHU’s mission.

“I am honored to join TOHU as Co-General Director, Administration, alongside Pascale Bélanger, Co-General Director, Programming, and the entire team.” said Benoit Mathieu.Together, we aim to strengthen the organization’s foundations while advancing its threefold mission: Circus, Earth, and Humanity. Since its inception, TOHU has achieved remarkable milestones, and its future is brimming with opportunities. I am eager to collaborate with the teams, partners, and cultural stakeholders to continue showcasing this unique institution. My sincere gratitude goes to the Board of Directors and its Chair, Ms. Diane Lemieux, for their trust.”

This new co-leadership model paves the way for innovative initiatives and projects, furthering TOHU’s threefold mission: Circus, Earth, and Humanity. It also strengthens its commitment to Montreal’s artistic and civic community.

Diane Lemieux, Chair of the Board of Directors added, “We are confident that Benoit Mathieu will bring innovative vision and a management approach focused on collaboration, transparency, and efficiency to TOHU. Through his dedication, he will actively contribute to advancing the organization while strengthening our strategic partnerships within the cultural sector.”
