Description:POSITION OVERVIEWThe Lighting Designer for Il barbiere di Siviglia is responsible for creating and implementing a lighting design that supports the storytelling, music, and visual world of the production. Working closely with the Director, Scenic Designer, and Production team, the Lighting Designer will develop a cohesive design that enhances mood, clarity, and theatricality. This role includes preparing all lighting documentation, overseeing the hang + focus, cueing, and collaborating with the lighting crew to ensure the design is executed safely, efficiently, and to a high artistic standard. PRODUCTIONS Rossini+rsquo;s Il barbiere di Siviglia (sung in Italian) DATES + SCHEDULE Hang, Focus, + Cueing - July 7-9, 2026 Technical Rehearsals - July 11-15, 2026 Performance 1 - July 17, 2026 @ 7:00 PM Performance 2 - June 19, 2026 @ 2:00 PM COMPENSATION $2,500-$3,000, depending on experience. TRAVEL + HOUSING Housing will be provided, with transportation arranged as needed. Ride-share expenses for essential errands may be reimbursed up to $125 with receipts. Travel reimbursement up to $350 (with receipts). KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Create and implement a lighting design that supports the artistic vision of the production. Collaborate with the Director, Scenic Designer, Projection Designer, and Production team to ensure a cohesive visual approach. Prepare all lighting documentation, including plots, hookups, cue sheets, and related paperwork. Specify lighting equipment and work within the approved production budget. Oversee the hang, focus, programming, and cueing of the lighting design. Work closely with the Head Electrician and lighting crew to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient execution of the design. IDEAL EXPERIENCE Demonstrated experience designing lighting for professional theatrical or operatic productions. Advanced working knowledge of ETC Eos+ndash;family control systems, including cueing, effects, and show file management. Proven ability to produce clear, complete lighting documentation and communicate design intent to crews. Experience collaborating with directors, designers, and production leadership while managing designs within approved schedules and budgets. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb for extended periods Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry materials up to 50 pounds independently Comfortable working at heights, including ladders or lifts Ability to perform repetitive motions and manual tasks Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required Charlottesville Opera is committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful working environment and encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply.
