The Show People Podcast with Andrew Keates Reveals August Guests
Following a triumphant relaunch in June, The Show People Podcast continues its dazzling new chapter as a live monthly event at the iconic Two Brewers, Clapham. Hosted by award-winning theatre director and Queer Theatre’s Artistic Director Andrew Keates, The Show People Podcast proudly announces the next two guests for August: internationally acclaimed drag artist and musical theatre star JP McCue aka Mary Mac on Thursday 7 August, followed by one of the world’s most celebrated actors and activists, Sir Ian McKellen, on Thursday 14 August. Funny, honest, and utterly captivating, these live episodes shine a spotlight on the UK performing arts industry and those dedicated to their craft.
Hailing from Glasgow, Mary Mac is a force of nature, known for her unique blend of humour, powerhouse vocals, and extraordinary stage presence. From starring in the acclaimed La Cage Aux Folles at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and the UK tour of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Mary Mac is a true star of stage and cabaret. She’s opened for drag legend Bianca Del Rio on her Unsanitized and Dead Inside tours across the UK and Europe and continues to electrify LGBTQ+ venues with her spectacular cabaret shows, always ending with the legendary “Mary Mac Medley.” She will be joining Andrew for an unmissable evening exploring drag, musical theatre, a life at sea, and behind-the-scenes tales from a career that continues to dazzle.
Expect truth, humour, and unforgettable stories from national treasure Sir Ian McKellen as he joins The Show People Podcast for a very special night of insight, inspiration, and legendary storytelling. A towering figure in British and international culture, Sir Ian has received more than 60 major awards for his work on stage and screen, including Waiting for Godot The Lord of the Rings and X-Men.
Beyond his accolades, Sir Ian has been a tireless advocate for LGBTQ+ rights since publicly coming out in 1988. He co-founded Stonewall, has used his platform to campaign for equality, and was knighted in 1991 for services to the performing arts before being appointed a Companion of Honour for services to Drama and Equality. This live recording offers an extraordinary opportunity to hear from one of the greatest actors of our time in an intimate venue.
These events are part of Queer Theatre’s mission to ensure LGBTQ+ theatre-makers always have somewhere to connect, create, and be inspired. They sit alongside our 2B: Acting Classes, OutCast showcases, theatre trips, parties, masterclasses, and original productions.
Another incredible event hosted by Queer Theatre are their monthly Queer Play Reading Club’s in partnership with Nick Hern Books – an opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of LGBTQIA+ playwriting. Queer Theatre are proud to share that the next three Reading Club’s will be centred iconic queer playwrights, each being in attendance: Jennifer Lunn (Es & Flo; Terrior), Michael Dennis (Dark Sublime; A Grand Day Out) and Nathaniel J. Hall (First Time). This offers attendees a unique chance to deeply explore the text alongside the writer and gain valuable insight into their work.
