The Life & Legacy of Hovey Burgess

On September 15, 2025, the iconic Slipper Room in New York City will host an unforgettable evening honoring Hovey Burgess, the legendary circus innovator, teacher, and mentor whose influence has shaped generations of performers.
Produced by Uncle Mustard — the creative studio led by photographer and filmmaker Amanda Mustard (director of Emmy-nominated Great Photo, Lovely Life on HBO)— this one-night-only celebration will be filmed for the forthcoming documentary on Burgess’s life. Audience members will not only witness the spectacle but also become part of it for the film!
Marking his 85th birthday, the tribute show will be opened by Hovey himself as the foot-juggling polar bear, before giving way to a kaleidoscopic lineup of biographically inspired variety acts performed by a surprise lineup of New York’s best nightlife artists — Hovey’s chosen family of performers who, like him, call the Slipper Room home. Through a mix of skill, humor, and unconventional storytelling, each act offers a whimsically personal tribute, transforming chapters of Hovey’s extraordinary life into an original, heartfelt, and occasionally sexy spectacle.
A fixture of the New York variety arts scene, Hovey Burgess has spent six decades redefining circus arts — from his pioneering work as a juggler to his decades as a beloved NYU professor and mentor to countless artists. Known for blending high skill with irreverent play, Burgess’s impact on circus history are immeasurable – as is his impassioned contributions to polar bear conservation. Join us on Sept 15th to celebrate his legacy with him!
