Mitchell Butel: Sydney Theatre Company Has a New Artistic Director

The Sydney Theatre Company (STC) has announced Mitchell Butel as its new Artistic Director and Co-CEO, stepping into the role amid financial challenges following the resignation of Kip Williams. Butel, an award-winning actor, writer, and director, is set to begin his tenure in November 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous role at the State Theatre Company South Australia (STCSA).

Butel’s connection with STC is longstanding, having performed in 17 shows for the company since his debut in 1992. His directorial debut with STC in 2023, “The Goat or, Who Is Sylvia?” was a notable success, bringing Claudia Karvan back to the stage after 25 years. Over his career, Butel has been involved in more than 150 productions, earning accolades for both his acting and directing.

Acknowledging the financial pressures STC currently faces, Butel emphasized the need for a strategic blend of commercially successful shows and riskier, innovative productions. He also highlighted the importance of lobbying for greater funding and building relationships with government and corporate partners to secure the company’s future.

Butel is passionate about making STC a welcoming space for artists, pledging to listen to their needs and bring their most urgent stories to the stage. He also expressed a desire to tackle difficult subjects within the theatre’s productions rather than through external gestures, aiming to foster dialogue and healing through art.

Mitchell Butel’s appointment comes as STC looks to navigate its financial difficulties and reinvigorate its connection with audiences. His deep love for the company, which began when he was just 16 years old, fuels his commitment to ensuring STC remains a vital and vibrant part of Australia’s cultural landscape.
