Simply Good at Chamäleon Berlin

The acclaimed Australian company Gravity & Other Myths returns to Chamäleon Berlin for the summer season with its popular piece “A Simple Space”.

It’s like friends returning with something special on each visit: In June 2025, the award-winning circus company Gravity & Other Myths (GOM) brings back to Chamäleon Berlin a production eagerly awaited by many fans. GOM previously performed their global success A Simple Space to great acclaim at Chamäleon in early 2023 – however, it was a one-week guest performance as part of the series Play; the limited number of performances were all sold out in the blink of an eye. This time, the audience will be given more time: A Simple Space will be shown at the theatre in the Hackesche Höfe from the beginning of June to the beginning of August 2025. The summer season, newly added to the theatre’s program, will therefore be entirely dedicated to GOM.

In A Simple Space, seven acrobats compete against and with each other in a playful competition, accompanied only by live percussion. No make-up, no backdrops: The modest setting highlights the piece’s focus on direct encounters – the audience gets right up close, sharing in the excitement as the artists push each other to the limits of the physically possible. Failure is just as much a part of this game as fun, passion, and triumph; the performers have nothing to hide behind. A Simple Space is an invitation to get swept away for 60 minutes – touching and honest.

“This combination of warmth, joy of performing, and amazing physical control makes Gravity & Other Myths unique,” says Chamäleon director Anke Politz. “With the return of their debut A Simple Space, the company also shows us how it all began and why they made it to the world stage.” Few ensembles manage to establish such a direct and sincere connection with the audience. “Entertaining, light-footed, and fast-paced – A Simple Space is contemporary circus for all ages,” says Politz. Another reason why the Chamäleon offers affordable “Family & Friends” packages for the summer season.

The decision to divide the yearly program into three larger seasons reflects the theatre’s commitment to broadening its repertoire and offering opportunities to more companies. The new summer season aims above all to allow existing and touring pieces a slot on the coveted circus stage. The Chamäleon presents the productions without an interval – ideal for audiences looking to combine long summer evenings with a shorter cultural event.

A Simple Space marked the beginning of their success story, and the piece has crossed the planet with more than 1,000 performances – as well as receiving numerous international awards such as the Best Circus Award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Audience Award at the Zürcher Theater Spektakel and the Emil Zapatero Prize at the Festival Teatro y Artes de Calle (TAC) in Valladolid, Spain. Subsequent works such as Backbone and Out Of Chaos continued their impressive track record. The latter, for instance, won the prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Physical Theatre; it was performed at Chamäleon in 2023 as part of the three-month production cycle Gravity & Other Myths: A Company in Residence, which also featured the memorable premiere of The Mirror. Last year, GOM opened the Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen with their multi-award-winning piece The Pulse, the first circus work in the festival’s history.
