Shows Without Updates

Theatre fans around the world are notorious for being willing to wait lengthy periods of time before seeing a show be performed live for the first time. Unfortunately, some shows take a while to get to the stage. This can happen for several reasons but it still leaves fans disappointed every time. It also makes the press and journalists look bad if we don’t publish an update about shows we have announced and promoted. Sometimes, shows go without updates and no one is told anything for a while.

The Hunger Games On Stage:

It has been a year since the announcement of the popular dystopian future books and films getting a debut in London. In the initial public announcement, Lionsgate was excited to say that the show would be open in Autumn of this year. With the end of the year around the corner, and no fresh updates, it is looking less and less likely that the show will even debut before the year is finished. The latest rumour has been that the earliest the show will debut is January 2025 but even that seems like a dream.

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends:

After Stephen Sondheim’s death two years ago, fans were excited about the initial announcement for this show making its debut on London’s West End. It was originally supposed to run for only 16 weeks. It’s no surprise that it is being transferred to Broadway in New York with everything he dedicated to shows there. A year later though and it has only recently had more news about an update on the cast.

The Queen of Versailles:

Making its world premiere only recently, The Queen of Versailles announced quickly that it would be heading for Broadway with high hopes to get into the new season. Fans were let down when next year’s season was announced without The Queen of Versailles and no confirmed date or venue for the show for any upcoming seasons either.

Coco:

Disney theatre fans will recognise the large company’s work by promising a glistening new theatrical show without promising anything else. Disney’s Coco was originally announced in January of last year at one of the annual events held by the company. Since then, only the creative team has been announced with no further updates.

Magic Mike:

Previously supposed to have its world premiere in Boston in late 2019, the show cancelled the premiere due to multiple members of the creative team leaving the project. While Magic Mike Live has done well in ticket sales in both their locations of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and London, UK there has been no updates since 2019 about the show attempting to continue to New York. The most recent rumours are that shows in both locations have had difficulty with technical aspects and will not be moving forward with more locations anytime soon.

Purple Rain:

This is another show I reported on and was excited for myself. Alas, almost a year later there have been no further updates about the Prince film inspired stage show. The show is still set to make its world-premiere late next year in October at the State Theatre in Minneapolis before supposedly going forward to Broadway.

Drew Janine
Live Sound Engineer -EUROPE
Janine has always been a part of music and performing. The first show that inspired her to go into theatre was the Velveteen Rabbit which she saw as a child, and Drew works to keep that magic alive as working behind the scenes in theatre as a live sound engineer. When Drew was accepted into an internship program for audio engineering at a recording studio, she jumped at the opportunity. That was at the start of 2020 and so much has happened since then, both in her career and in the world. Since then, Drew has taken several opportunities to work at recording studios, concerts, festivals, and even large theatres while spending time on tour across the North American continent and Europe. Drew’s favourite by far though has been the chance to work on Broadway and West End shows, as this was a dream come true. Drew is honoured to get to share these experiences from being inside the entertainment industry and hopes to inspire others to continue working in theatre.
