Paramour’s Curtain Closes on Broadway

Paramour, Cirque du Soleil’s Broadway musical , closed its curtain for the last time at Lyric Theatre on April 16th. Paramour is described as “themed to the ‘Golden age of Hollywood’ and following the life of ‘a poet who is forced to choose between love and art’”. Apparently, there are also zoot suits. Wondering if a company from Canada nailed a musical play on Broadway about life in Hollywood? As their first foray into the world of Broadway musicals, the question still remains, how did they fare? After mixed reviews and 366 performances since opening in May of 2016, the gig is up.
Over the past year in NYC, the cast and crew consisted of 70 different international members and featured 15 different circus disciplines ranging from crowd pleasing numbers on Russian bar to high flying moments on teeter board and trampoline.
However, in August of last year, the show took a break in order to make creative changes. Then in December, Lyric Theater announced it would close for renovations, causing Cirque du Soleil to start looking for a new home. They are rumored to have no shortage of international offers, including one from Germany to possibly remount the show in 2018. Although it remains to be seen if Paramour will re-emerge, the cast and crew did make some memories and push the threshold of what it means to make circus a truly inter-disciplinary contemporary art form aimed at (in this case) a uniquely American audience.
