Cheeyang Ng Makes London Debut with Fat, Femme & Asian

What do Jon M. Chu (Wicked, Crazy Rich Asians), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) and Cheeyang Ng have in common? They all won the Princess Grace Award.

Singapore’s first Campus Superstar, Cheeyang Ng, makes their London debut with an evening of songs from their various musicals-in-development, including Eastbound with Khiyon Hursey (Hamilton), Māyā with Eric Sorrels (Kennedy Center), The Phoenix with Desdemona Chiang (AFI DWW+) and Eric Sorrels.  Additionally, this is the chance to get a sneak peek at their solo show, Legendary, and their viral TikTok originals inspired by Heartstopper.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to see highlights from all Cheeyang’s work, putting Asian stories front and centre.  Fat, Femme & Asian is a celebration of words that have been deemed undesirable in many spaces and a reclamation of these identities. The show explores why Cheeyang became a writer, specifically for musical theatre, and what are the stories that excite them as we reimagine a new landscape for epic Asian stories.

Fat, Femme & Asian features the incredible cast of Roshani Abbey (West End: Hamilton), Desmonda Cathabel (UK Tour: Aladdin), Diya Sohi (TV: The Beaker Girls), Aaron Teoh (Movie: Wicked) and Sonya Venugopal (Broadway & UK Tour: Life of Pi).

The one-off concert performance is directed by Nina Zoie Lam (Broadway’s Miss Saigon, Marvel’s Hawkeye) with music directed by Yshani Perinpanayagam (Royal Opera House).

Cheeyang Ng comments, I am so thrilled to be bringing my work to London and sharing it on the global stage. Cannot wait for London audiences to experience epic Asian storytelling.

Born and raised in Singapore, Cheeyang Ng is an award-winning singer-songwriter who writes at the intersection of queer, Asian and immigrant stories. They have performed around the world, including Lincoln Center with Carole King and Carnegie Hall with a cappella group Vocalosity and hold an MFA from New York University and a BMus from Berklee College of Music. They are the first Singaporean to headline a concert at Joe’s Pub and Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center showcasing their original music.  They have won multiple vocal awards all across Asia, including Singapore, Taiwan and China.

Cheeyang’s musical Maya: The Musical will have a workshop in the UK in 2025.  Stephen Schwartz calls it ‘fresh and interesting’ and Jason Robert Brown hails Cheeyang as ‘an extraordinary writer as well as a glorious singer’.  Set in 1930s British India, Maya: The Musical, co-written with Eric Sorrels, follows an aspiring poet named Maya Mehta as she sets out to make her mark on the world.  With a contemporary score that fuses Indian classical music with Western pop, Maya is the story of how one poet, one dreamer, one person can make a lasting mark on a movement.
