Casa Hechale Opens Winter Residencies for Theatre and Performance Artists in Mexico City
Centro Cultural Casa Hechale is accepting applications for its winter 2026–27 artist residencies in Mexico City. Artists working in theatre, film, performance and related fields can spend two or four weeks developing work at the centre in Santa María la Ribera. Alongside accommodation and working space, the residency offers artistic conversations and opportunities to meet local practitioners. Applications for the December–January cycle close October 30, 2026.
A script changes when it is read aloud. A performance idea changes when it meets a rehearsal room, another artist or an unfamiliar city. Casa Hechale gives artists time and space for that part of the work: the searching, testing and conversation that can happen well before a piece is ready for an audience.
The centre brings visiting artists into a working cultural space in Mexico City. Residents can use its rehearsal and reading rooms for writing and research, and may request time in the black box theatre to explore staging or movement. The front gallery and Salon CHÁ offer other settings for visual work, readings and discussion. Each artist shapes their stay around a project or question of their own; a finished production is not required.
Exchange is part of the residency’s daily life. Residents have individual conversations with Casa Hechale’s creative team and artistic advisers, and are invited to activities taking place at the centre during their stay. When a project calls for it, the team may introduce an artist to theatre makers, researchers or cultural organisations in Mexico City. An informal Open House gives residents the option to share a question, an excerpt or a glimpse of work in progress with others.
These encounters matter in both directions. Visiting artists gain time with people whose practices and perspectives are rooted in Mexico City; local artists meet colleagues bringing different methods, languages and questions to the room. Casa Hechale hopes those conversations can continue beyond a single residency, through future work and relationships between artists in Mexico and abroad.
Applications are open to artists worldwide at all career stages. The programme’s working languages are Spanish and English. The next residency cycle runs from December 2026 through January 2027, with an application deadline of October 30, 2026. Two-week and four-week stays are available. Programme fees vary by duration and room type, and a limited number of fee-reduction scholarships are available for selected four-week residents.
