Award-Winning Hot Mess Brings Its Romcom Musical to London

Following its critically acclaimed five-star world premiere and ahead of its London transfer, the award-winning new musical Hot Mess, described as ‘blazing’ (The Guardian) and ‘ingenious’ (The Scotsman), scooped five major awards and earned widespread acclaim from both press and audiences alike.

Performed by Tobias Turley and Danielle Steers as Humanity and Earth respectively, the production scooped five major awards, including the Fringe First award in recognition for exceptional new writing, the Popcorn Writing Award 2025, Musical Theatre Review’s New Musical Theatre Award, The List magazine’s International Fringe Encore Series prize and recognition in The Stage’s Fringe Five.

With the London debut fast approaching this October, this high-energy original rom-com musical cleverly reimagines the climate crisis as a story of love, hope and the ultimate break up. Created by Jack Godfrey and Ellie Coote, the award-winning creative duo behind 42 Balloons, the pop comedy musical takes us to the heart of the tempestuous relationship between Earth and Humanity.
Hot Mess was the first Edinburgh Festival Fringe production from the UK’s only in-house New Musical Theatre Department at Birmingham Hippodrome.

Deirdre O’Halloran, Head of New Musical Theatre at Birmingham Hippodrome, comments, The success of Hot Mess at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows that audiences are hungry for bold and innovative original stories that reflect the big issues of our times. Our creative team poured their hearts into this show and we are so proud that it has connected with so many people. This is a terrific first chapter of this show’s life and we can’t wait to see how it grows.

Jon Gilchrist, Artistic Director and CEO of Birmingham Hippodrome, comments, We are enormously proud that work by the New Musical Theatre Department of Birmingham Hippodrome is receiving acclaim on a national stage less than two years after the department’s inception. Birmingham Hippodrome is thrilled to be part of a new musical theatre ecology in the UK that is beginning to thrive. We are excited to continue to make meaningful contributions to the development of new work for years to come.
