Cumming, originally from Perthshire, began his professional theatre journey at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre 40 years ago, and went on to make waves in the West End with his portrayal of Hamlet. He later earned a Tony Award in 1998 for his role as the Master of Ceremonies in the renowned production of Cabaret. His return to Scotland and to theatre was inevitable, according to Cumming, who said, “All roads lead to the theatre, and all roads lead to Scotland.”
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, known for its diverse productions and commitment to innovation, was founded in 1951. Set against the stunning backdrop of Highland Perthshire, it attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, drawn to its unique programming and the beauty of its surroundings. Cumming’s vision for the theatre is to amplify its global presence while continuing to honor Scotland’s theatrical traditions. He emphasized his desire to invite world-class theatre artists to collaborate and perform, showcasing Scotland’s rich cultural heritage.
Pitlochry’s Executive Director, Kris Bryce, expressed immense enthusiasm for Cumming’s appointment, noting that Cumming’s passion for theatre and Scotland was palpable from their very first meeting. “Under Alan’s artistic leadership, I am confident we will continue to grow in our role as the nation’s most impactful producing theatre, delivering bold, innovative work that resonates with audiences both locally and internationally,” Bryce stated.
Cumming’s new role at Pitlochry Festival Theatre is not just about artistic vision—it is also deeply personal. Cumming has referred to his return as a “homecoming,” remarking that the theatre is a “hidden gem with amazing facilities and boundless possibilities.” In addition to his artistic direction, he is committed to making the theatre a place that remains deeply rooted in the community, while inviting global talent to share in its vision.
Cumming will begin his programming in 2026, with the 2025 season already set to include productions of The Great Gatsby, Grease, The 39 Steps, and four new plays in the theatre’s Studio. Elizabeth Newman, who will conclude her six-year tenure as Artistic Director in December 2024 with The Sound of Music, welcomed the transition. “I cannot think of a better person to join Kris Bryce at the helm and write the next chapter of Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s story,” Newman said, praising Cumming for his leadership and artistic vision.
This announcement comes at a time when Scottish theatre is undergoing significant changes, with other notable figures like David Greig stepping down from leadership roles in Edinburgh. However, Cumming’s appointment signals a continued commitment to innovation and growth, even amid financial pressures facing the arts sector in Scotland.
Cumming, a fervent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and Scottish independence, is no stranger to reinvention. In addition to his theatrical work, he has delved into photography, memoir writing, and co-owns a successful queer cabaret bar in New York City. His varied experiences and global perspective are expected to bring new energy to Pitlochry Festival Theatre, elevating its status as a cultural landmark both in Scotland and internationally.
As PFT gears up for Cumming’s arrival, excitement is building for the dynamic programming and collaborative opportunities he will bring. As Cumming himself said, “I cannot wait to share Pitlochry with the world, and the world with Pitlochry.”
