In episode 3, I chat with Dustin Walston about career transitions. As many artists know and experience, a performing arts career tends to be accompanied by an eventual transition off-stage. An international acrobat with 20 years experience in competitive and stage acrobatics, he has performed in over 35 countries and 120 cities around the world with Cirque du Soleil, Franco Dragone, Giulio Scatola, Imagine Entertainment and Creativiva before accepting a management role for Cirque Du Soleil’s Luzia in 2019. His passion for entertaining audiences continues to be the driving force in his life. Dustin is an proud advocate for LGBTQIA+, race and gender equality worldwide as well as gender pay equality in the workplace.
An athlete turned artist turned artistic staffer on tour, Dustin is an industry lifer. In fact, just a couple months after we recorded this episode, and as the pandemic waned, Dustin accepted a new performing contract! He is currently performing as the lead character acrobat in P&O Cruise’s newest ship IONA in the United Kingdom under the creative direction of Lukas Cavala of Creativiva-Toronto. We discuss “sprinkling the seeds” in an effort to nurture the future career opportunities, and the important role that self-awareness and communication play in staying on course — and even one step ahead.
