The Space

About

The Space is a movement arts studio that embraces all forms of aerial dance as well as ground movement. At The Space we offer aerial classes including pole, trapeze, rope, and silks. We also offer a wide variety of classes that don't require your feet to leave the ground! These include hoop dance, functional flexibility, breakdancing, yoga, and belly dancing.

The Space was founded and opened in May of 2014. Since then it has grown into an amazing community of movement artists that host shows such as Open Grip and The Black Curtain Revue. The Space is also the home of the first ever Atlanta Aerial Arts Festival which was started in the spring of 2016.

Courses

Hoop Dance: Body Rocking Hoops

Recreational Programs

In this mixed level hoop series we will explore different layers of core and on-body hooping. We will conquer all of the challenges knee, waist, and shoulder hooping to create comfortable "bases" on different planes of our body. By building these key muscle memories we can then focus on adding multiple hoops into the mix! I'm beyond excited to share my favorite circus style multi hoop techniques, and can't wait to body-rock with you all! $15/class

Hoop Dance: Twin Tech

Recreational Programs

techniques in this mixed level series at The Space! This class will cover all of the key timings, directions, and plane changes needed to open up your double hoop flow. By understanding these key theories, we can create unique, smooth like butter doubles. And maybe even get creative with some smancy hoop hybrids. $15/class

Beginner Fabric I

Recreational Programs

Pre-Requisite: Must have attended Intro to Aerial Arts at THE SPACE or have instructor permission. Beginner Fabric I is for students that have learned the basics in Intro to Aerial Arts (a one time class) and are ready to work on fundamental skills in aerial fabric! In this class you will learn such foundational moves as climbing, tying foot knots, foot knot poses, as well as short sequences. All of these skills are key to getting you ready to move up to Beginner Fabric II! Your instructor will advise you when you are ready to move up to Beginner Fabric II. $20/class

Intermediate Fabric I

Recreational Programs

Pre-Requesites: - Proficient with Bicycle or Big Russian (aka Russian Flirt) - Invert in Air - Comfortable with Double Crochet - Tie a foot knot in air - OS and SS hooks and where they lead - Crossback Straddle The curriculum for Intermediate Fabric is centered on technical execution, creative sequencing, and skills that are based on inversions. Students will begin to work on choreography as well as incorporating character and styling into their silks work. In order to succeed in this class, students must be able to comfortably invert in the air and be familiar with same and opposite side hook. $20/class

Functional Flexibility

Recreational Programs

Functional Flexibility is a basic all levels stretching and ground skills class. The bulk of this class is spent getting a comprehensive full-body stretch, followed by a focus on a narrower subject. Focuses include: splits, backbends, handstands, basic tumbling, and balances. In this class we will build strength and flexibility to perform the skills that seem just out of reach! Beginner to advanced students welcome. $20/person

Beginner Lyra

Recreational Programs

Pre-requisite: Intro to Aerial Arts Beginner Lyra is a great class for those starting out on aerial hoop and for experienced students that want to bring it back to basics! We will look at fundamental moves on single and double point lyras and build a strong understanding of movement through the air. $20/person

Intermediate Lyra

Recreational Programs

Pre-reqs. - must be comfortable with double knee beats - must be able to invert from the bottom and top bars - must know the differences between inside and outside lion in the tree - must be comfortable in press support positions (e.g. dragonfly, amazon) - must be able to pull over to bottom bar Intermediate Lyra will really begin to explore the possibilities of the hoop. We will focus on opening doors to new moves through strength and flexibility. Sequencing and understanding transitions will also be emphasized. Come and have a blast with us! $20/person

Basics of Breakin' (Breakdancing)

Recreational Programs

Students will learn to effectively move and dance with only the floor as their apparatus.Together, we will be working on establishing a firm understanding of the foundational movements of breaking. Students will learn toprock and footwork basics and will be introduced to freezes. All students' welcome! It is recommended to wear comfortable pants that extend below the knee, tennis shoes, and a hat/beanie without buttons or heavy accessories. $15/class

Beginner Trapeze

Pre-Requisite: Must have attended Intro to Aerial Arts or have instructor approval to join. Students will start to learn simple aerial vocabulary with body awareness and safety in the beginner trapeze class. Students will first learn different ways to mount the apparatus and skills under the bar and sitting. Once students are comfortable with those skills, we will move onto standing poses and move into sequencing skills as endurance grows. Transitions between poses/skills are taught and explored in every class to build endurance, awareness, and dance technique. $20/class

Rope I - Foundations

Pre-requisites: - Climb (classical aka French or Russian) - Invert (at least from ground)

Rope II - Fundamentals

Pre-requisites: - Climb (classical and Russian) - Invert in air - Toe climb - understanding of inside (same side) and outside (opposite side) hooks - Foot lock (figure 8, dancers, or half lock) - Hip lock

Acro Fitness

Recreational Programs

Do you want to get stronger? Do you want to take your Acro to the next level? Join Danny & Aniane, The AcroSmiths as they lead our weekly Friday night Acro Fitness FUNdementals. This class will focus on form, alignment, balance, and getting yourself in acroshape. We will use partner balancing and bodyweight exercises to find smoothness and ease in acro poses and washing machines. Be prepared to be challenged, encouraged, and flat out awesome!!! This class is ALL levels, and no partner is necessary. Class will be $15 and will include entry into the Friday night Acro Jam. We will emphasize safety, and variations for beginner to advanced acro monkeys.

Acro Jam

Recreational Programs

Come to The Space and hang out with The Acro Smiths (Danny and Aniane). They will be hosting this weekly Acro Jam with guest appearances by a number of other local and traveling Acro Lovers! This jam runs from 8pm until "whenever"! $5/person

Intermediate Fabric II

Pre-Requisites: -Beginner Fabric I and II and Intermediate I pre-requisites -Able to complete a closed wrap (opposite wrap) and catchers hang (same side wrap) in the air -Able to crochet climb -Able to demo a clean single star
