Born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, Yu received degree in theatre arts majoring in Theatre Theory from Taipei National University of the Arts(TNUA). He is currently an independent theatre maker, producer, dramaturg and critic. Due to his multiple artistic training in the early years, Yu can easily shifts his practices and combines them with aesthetics of different genres. He is the chief editor of DUMAXI, a Taiwanese seasonal circus media, also the Deputy Managing Director of International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC), Taiwan Branch at the moment. He was the international affairs manager and resident dramaturge of Formosa Circus Art (FOCA), a contemporary circus company based in Taipei.
Yu served as coordinator, dramaturg and producer in different projects of FOCA, including “Ole”, the most extensive toured contemporary circus production in Taiwan history so far; cross-country collaboration with British director Timothy Lenkiewicz “I Have My Demons Have Me”. Yu is the producer in FOCA’s interdisciplinary project “Disappearing Island” with Filipino visual artist Leeroy New. Yu also served as dramaturg in "Wukong: Before the Journey to the West", "Disappearing Island", "Circus As Folks, and Mr. III 三III(WIP)".
With the rising of the circus community in Asian countries, Yu represented FOCA as founding committee of Circus Asia Network (CAN) during 2018-2021. He also curated the first ever contemporary circus forum in Taiwan in 2018. The second edition “2019 Taiwan International Circus Forum” was held in collaboration between FOCA and National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts-Weiwuying. The Mandarin edition of "Contemporary Circus" (Routledge, 2019) was translated by Yu and published by National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts-Weiwuying in 2021.
