Stijn Dickel (born in 1974) studied philosophy (UGent) and mixed media (DKO). After his studies, he worked with Jan Fabre as musician / performer for the dance production Je Suis Sang for four years. He has worked for different other theatre and dance productions (fABULEUS, Sermoen, Campo, Hel’s Kitchen, Ben Benaouisse, grensgeval, …) as musician and sound artist, joined improvisational musical temporary ensembles (with Köhn, Hi Shi Wah Killers, Gerrit Valckenaers, Metropolis Sextet, Reverie falls on all, Melting pot,…) and played in the music collective Kaboom Karavan (Bram Bosteels) and Inwolves (Karen Willems).
Stijn is also artistic director of aifoon, a participatory, nomadic workplace initiative, centered around the art of listening. In his solo work as listening artist, Stijn focuses on the relationship between listening and movement / being moved. In his research on the choreography of sound and the scenography of listening, he focusses on portable sound compositions. He developed several indoor and outdoor sound walks (Watch out! for Canvas / Watch in! for Permeke museum,…), audio hackings (Trefpunt, Salto festival, AMOK,…), listening performances (Fondouk, icw grensgeval: Stadsruis, PLOCK!, Murmur,…) and sound installations (Passata, Zinderspin, De Zwerm,…).
