Hey there,
my name is Laya Lia Yo.
I was born in Germany and live in Berlin. Today, I celebrate 20 years of life and 15 years immersed in the circus world. But to be honest, I was climbing on our home shelves even before I could walk.
Naturally, I began my journey in a youth circus as a child, then transitioned to sports acrobatics, eventually finding my place at the "Staatliche Artisten Schule Berlin." Over the next 9 years, I underwent rigorous and disciplined training to become a professional circus artist. I dedicated 4 years to strict conditioning, followed by learning the fundamentals of tumbling, hand balancing, tightwire, juggling, and trapeze.
During this period, I also discovered the world of dance for myself. While school provided me with 6 years of ballet and 5 years of modern dance, outside of school, I attended contemporary classes that later influenced my act creations and movement qualities.
In the last three to four years of my education program, I chose Dance Trapeze as my main focus. I love learning and challenging myself, so I gained experience in various circus disciplines like pole dance. I especially honed my hand balancing and tumbling/acrobatics skills beyond the basics.
Today, I can confidently say that acrobatics is one of my main disciplines, along with hand balancing, which I prefer using for hand-to-hand in duo or trio performances, and what I love most, group acrobatics.
Since graduating in Summer 2022, I have become part of several companies and show productions. But before delving into my current endeavors, let me share my graduation tour experience: we toured exclusively in Germany, performing in 20 cities and 40 shows. It was an excellent first impression of what it means to work as an acrobat! However, deep down, I knew I wanted to not only tour Germany but explore the world!
After getting to know my body through physical exploration in circus techniques, research, and dance, I found myself drawn to Urban Art and street shows. I am fortunate to be a part of "The Funky Monkeys" in Berlin, an Urban Circus Dance Company that performs street shows with Chinese Pole and skipping rope.
I was also invited to join one of the "Urbanatix" ensembles for a new touring production. "Urbanatix," based in Bochum, Germany, is where street art meets acrobats.
A bit different are the "Cosmic Artists." With this team, we present more conventional Airtrack shows.
In addition to gala shows and other events, I participated in a contemporary production with "VoLA Stageart." The director of our show, "Encounters," worked closely with an apparatus constructor. Consequently, I became the first acrobat to perform on the "Flying Tetraeder" (on my feed, there is media showing what it is).
Looking forward on cooperating with you :)
