Artist's Statement:
Laura Powers (born 1997 in Orlando, Florida) is an aerial artist, oil painter, and inclusive movement instructor.
Laura’s art presents an existential memoir through gesture, symbolism, and affect. Drawn to the sublime, her work depicts human subjects amidst overwhelm. All is a dance of tension, an exploration of the in-between places of aerial dimensions, negative space, social relationships and solitude, and moments of transition. In her oil paintings, she develops movement and luminosity through both classically inspired methods and loose elaborations. As an aerial circus artist, her artistic practice shapes her state of being in a visceral way; she has found that the act of pushing past fear and vulnerability, a certain saltus fidei, leads to the experience of wonder and freedom. Through her interdisciplinary and figurative work, Laura considers the relationship of the body and soul of which the human person is composed.
Her approach to the figure is informed by her work as a movement instructor, which offers a unique perspective on human anatomy and mechanics. She has also been inspired by ancient civilization, contemporary dance, and the rich artistic and intellectual tradition of her Catholic faith. Believing that meaning truly does exist, her life has been characterized by this longing for things beyond the material, as well as a deep respect for the dignity of matter. Movement is interstitial.
