Ess (they/them/theirs) is a nonbinary contortionist, aerialist, and stunt performer from Toronto, Canada. They currently perform duo contortion with performance partner Troy James.Their unique athleticism has brought disturbing, contorted characters to life on commercials, TV, and film productions like “IT” (2017), Killjoys (SYFY), and The Strain (FX Network) as a full-ACTRA member performing both stunts and creature work. Ess performs regularly with Toronto-based company Illuminair Entertainment across Canada and the United States
Ess was the recipient of the CATALYST grant, a seed program funded by the Contemporary Circus Arts Festival of Toronto in association with the Ontario Arts Council to support upcoming independent circus artists in their professional development (2017), and their work has been awarded funding by the Canada Council for the Arts (2018), exploring trans bodies in circus, spectacle, and the concepts of binaries in performance (beautiful; grotesque) through Mongolian contortion and aerial straps.
Ess and Troy have been selected to compete in the 40th Festival Mondiale du Cirque de Demain in Paris, January 31 - February 3rd 2019.
