Growing up in Newcastle Australia with Scheuermann’s Kyphosis, Dean became fascinated with performing during his early years in high school, though he never dreamed of performing in the circus industry. He found the theatre and physical ways of expression to be a great escape from reality as well as a way to approach hard topics, and he decided from then on that’s exactly what he wanted to do.
Taking every opportunity to perform as often as he could in his school years, he continued on to study acting and movement to further support his development.
Intrigued with how the body and gentle nuances in movement can be used to create meaning, he found that he naturally leaned towards character-based performances and creating a connection with the audience. He wishes to create a special memory for each audience member in the way that he performs and creates.
Dean had the opportunity to undertake the Certificate IV in Circus Arts at NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts, Melbourne) In 2019, and was absolutely delighted to continue his training in 2020 in NICA’s bachelor program (despite the world coming to a halt for two years).
Now coming up in his third and final year of study at NICA, specialising in Bowl Kicking, Straps and Group Acro, Dean hopes to break the mould of the audiences perception of what circus can be and what a circus body is.
