Cirk La Putyka

Cirk La Putyka is a contemporary circus company from Prague, Czech Republic established in 2009, led by the artistic director Rostislav Novák Jr., and his brother, the general manager Vít Novák. The whole ensemble has more than 100 members, including actors, musicians, acrobats, puppeteers, and dancers, as well as production, technicians and other important professionals.

All members are among the top professionals in their fields and disciplines, but they are also able to cross the line into different areas of work. The team has been growing with each new project, but still keeps the same ideas, direction and energy.

We are striving to create our own specific theatre poetics and find a perspective on the genre as a whole. Cirk La Putyka arose from the passion, wildness and energy of diverse people and their desire to create something new together. We started with no money, no experience with the genre, but with the feeling that comedians’ blood was circulating in our bodies. We know what it takes to build a large production with the budget of just CZK 80,000 as well as what it takes to rehearse at minus 15 degrees Celsius. We know what it takes to make art without proper facilities.

It makes me think not only about myself, the world and art but also about everyday joys and sorrows. I enjoy looking for a personal artistic language involving multiple functions and genres, crafts, equilibristics, humility and, above all, the desire to explore and find something – even though it often hurts. However, one must know how to fall, to be able to stand up again and set out for some new ways to follow. Since 2009, we have played more than 2 200 performances, visited 23 countries, and cooperated with almost 300 people of 25 nationalities.
