Founded in September of 2010, Circus Warehouse of NYC is a collaborative effort to produce the next generation of elite circus performers, to integrate circus arts into mixed-media forms, and to provide a space for the development of new and experimental works. Arts champion/impresario/educator and Warehouse Director, Suzi Winson, runs the professional program which turns out top-level performers for traditional and contemporary circuses, and for dance and theatre productions that incorporate circus art skills.
The Warehouse has 8000 square feet of training space, and offers the following instruction: flying trapeze, silks, lyra, static trap, dance trap, rope, Chinese pole, Cyr wheel, acrobatic balancing, trampoline, classical and modern dance forms. We have the capacity and equipment for cloud swing, swinging trapeze, juggling and wire walking, but they are not on the regular schedule. CW has 30-foot ceilings, high enough to house a flying trapeze rig of classic proportion. Professional training is the primary focus, but the Warehouse also trains non-pro circus enthusiasts and dedicated athletic practitioners. We are the serious adult school in New York, we feel that everyone should have the privilege to train with top instructors in a professional environment, whatever your goals may be.
The culture that the Warehouse has cultivated attracts seasoned pros from all over the world who come to train and teach. Our community ranges from those with traditional circus backgrounds to the emerging nouveau cirque. The Warehouse is the residence of Dzul Dance, a company that fuses modern, ballet and tribal dancing with aerial arts. We house an associated fine art space, Art and Circuses Gallery.
The Warehouse faculty features Gold-medalist National Aerobic Champion and Kennimatix co-founder Ken Berkeley, Mongolian-trained contortionists/performers Kevin Carpenter (Khazu Chan) and Nobutaka Mochimaru, Mayan ritual dancer Javier Dzul, international gymnastics coach and judge Bruce Temple, Circus Abbysinia’s top star Summer Lacy, École National de Cirque’s wire-walking Patrick Tobin, Warehouse co-founder and aerialist Michelle Arvin, Universoul Circus’s Susan Voyticky, and many more luminaries. Please see website for complete faculty and bios. Most instructors at Circus Warehouse teach exclusively at the Warehouse and can teach a large variety of circus and dance forms. There are no student-level instructors at this training facility. Guest instructors have included flying stars Miguel Cáceres, Arturo Padilla, and Willy Pages, Peter Gold, and Tony Steele, Cirque du Soleil alums Gaston Elie, Rachel Walker, Guillaume Blais, Olympians Dave Durante and Olga Karmansky, and Broadway veterans Richie Maguire and Pacho. This list is continually developing.
Circus Warehouse regularly produces its own circus showcase at the facility with students, instructors and pros who train with us, a works-in-progress event, entitled “Caught in the Act”. We have also created the ambitious and truly avant garde aerial show, “Aerial Text Experiments” participating in an annual worldwide art/poetry movement, 100,000 Poets for Change.
In almost 9 years, our Intensive Professional Program has turned out artists for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey, Cirque du Soleil, Hamid Circus, Cole Brother’s Circus, Pop Circus, Circus Fusion, Circus Circus, Cirque de la Mer, Marvel Universe Live, Cirque Musica, Momix, Dzul Dance, and flying teams such as the High Flying Pages, the Flying Cortes, the Flying Cáceres, and the Flying Cáceres Girls, our homegrown troupe.
Come take a class with us today and see what circus dreams you might fulfill. We will help you.
