On the evening of 14 January 1971, the only stone circus in Central Europe, Capital Circus of Budapest, opened its doors. The dimensions of the building are the same as those of the iron-framed corrugated iron circus built in 1889 in the City Park, which was run by Ede Wulff. In 1895, the director transferred the lease of the circus to the Zoo. In 1904, Mátyás Beketow renovated the City Circus at his own expense, and it was called the Beketow Circus until 1934. In 1935, the capital's lease tender was won by György Fényes, and the renovated building was filled with world-famous artists. The circus was closed in 1944, when the capital refused to issue a licence because of the bombing. The Capital Circus of Budapest opened in July 1945. The circus was nationalised in the 1950s and the old building was demolished in 1966. The new, modern building, opened in 1971, was used by circus dynasties and famous artists. Many television programmes were recorded in the manege, as well as concerts and theatre performances.
In 1996, the Capital Circus of Budapest hosted the International Circus Festival, which has since become one of the world's leading festivals.
