JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Scenic Charge Artist / Scenic Designer
Salary + Benefits:
$50,000 per year
Eligible for Insurance Benefits after 90 days
Temporary housing available during relocation.
Department: Paints
Reports to (Position): Production Manager
Oversees: Assistant Scenic Charge Artist, Scenic Artist
Works Closely with: Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Props Manager, Guest Scenic Designers

Dates of Employment:
Start date is flexible. Full time, onsite work to begin as early as January 5th, but no later than March 9th.
Assistant Design work could begin remotely as early as September 2025.
Any assistant design work completed prior to January 5, 2026 would be paid on a contract basis.

SUMMARY: The Scenic Charge Artist / Scenic Designer is responsible for the safe and timely planning, execution and completion of painting of all scenic elements. In conjunction with the other department heads, the Scenic Charge Artist manages budgets and coordinates schedules. This position requires advanced skills in all types of scenic painting and sculpture as well as proven proficiency in leading a crew of artists. The Scenic Charge Artist / Scenic Designer will design or assistant design scenery for the Flat Rock Playhouse Music on the Rock series, the annual Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas revue and 2-3 mainstage productions per season. Design assignments in other theatrical design disciplines is possible in lieu of scenic designs if experience permits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Scenic Charge Artist
-Work with Production Manager to hire all scenic artists staff and over hire as applicable
-Work with Production Manager develop and oversee annual/show budgets
-Act as liaison between outside designers and paint staff to complete scenery paint needs
-Create cost estimates for labor and materials on all shows prior to build
-In conjunction with the technical director, communicate with designers on resources and budgets available
-Articulate paint and finishing techniques to designers and paint staff
-Oversee and delegate paint work to scenic artists
-Research and create paint samples
-Complete all scenic paint work on time and within available resources
-Maintain safe and clean workspace
-Maintain all shop inventory and equipment
-R+D new products and techniques

Scenic Designer
-Potential to serve as Scenic Designer on 2-3 theatrical productions per season plus the FRP Music on the Rock series (typically no more than 1 +ldquo;scripted+rdquo; concert per season) and the Annual Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas performance.
-Prepare scenic draftings and elevations necessary for the costing and construction of scenery.

Assistant Scenic Designer
-As assigned by Production Manager, work with outside designers to prepare draftings and elevations as necessary for the costing and build of scenery.
-Based on knowledge or FRP venues and resources, act as sounding board/consultant for outside designers on feasibility of design.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
-Complete required parking shifts during show runs along with other staff as assigned by management
-Other duties as assigned and within reason.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
-Bachelor+rsquo;s Degree in theatre/related field or commensurate experience.
-3-5 years experience working in scenic art preferred.
-Scenic Design experience
-Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
-Management and supervisory skills.
-Ability to work within tight deadlines and balance priorities.
-Experience in creating and monitoring budgets.
-Drafting experience (Vectorworks preferred).
-Ability to communicate effectively both orally and by e-mail with artistic and production teams.
-Ability to discern nuance in color and value.
-Proficiency with standard tools and materials of scenic art.
-Knowledge and experience in a wide variety of paint techniques
-Ability to work in a team and maintain a positive attitude.
-Commitment to the training and professional development of entry level theatre artists.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
-Ability to lift, carry and reposition objects of 50 pounds.
-Ability to be able to consistently position oneself in a stooping, kneeling, or crouching manner.
-Significant periods of working while standing.
-May require significant periods of repetitive arm and hand movements.
-Ability to ascend/descend ladders and work at heights.
-Outdoor work during summer months.
-Ability to work a varied schedule including nights and weekends, and occasional overnight calls.
