MVS is seeking an innovative and culturally inclusive music and jazz band performing arts teacher committed to developing compassionate global citizens. The ideal candidate is a passionate and skillful musician/educator, who is eager to invest their talents in our music, jazz band, and theater programs. The MVS Performing Arts Department creates a continuous learning experience in music and theater arts for students from Early Childhood through 12th grade. Grounded in the Orff method, students in EC-3 have the opportunity to engage in folk songs, movement activities, and pitched percussion performances. Beginning in grade 4, students choose between band, choir and string ensembles and may continue in their respective discipline through 12th grade. Advanced level ensembles are offered at the middle school level (including an a cappella choir and Jazz band). Each discipline also offers an upper school ensemble (A cappella choir, Jazz Band and String ensemble). Students also have the opportunity to engage in full-scale plays and musicals beginning in 4th grade.

This new faculty member should establish a supportive and engaging environment for students ranging from 4th - 12th grade, demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. Ideal candidates will possess prior experience leading mixed-level jazz bands, and directing/music directing theatre productions. Additional duties include co-teaching and designing a month-long immersive, interdisciplinary course, which may involve domestic and/or international travel. Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:

Direct a 4th/5th grade band ensemble, two middle school 6th-8th grade band ensembles, and an upper school jazz ensemble, in addition to varied upper school performing art elective courses
Lead/co-lead extracurricular activities, such as theater/musical theater productions
Lead/Co-lead an Immersion program in January
Develop and propose new courses each year, including new Immersion programs
Prepare students for winter and spring choir concerts in addition to performances for school events, occasionally in support of Development or Admissions

Qualifications:

Undergraduate or Master Degree in Music (performance or education) is required
The desire to work with 4th-12th grade students in an experiential setting
Demonstrate a high level of musicianship, including being a competent piano accompanist
Ability to sight read, arrange/transpose instrumental parts
Audio engineering skills are a plus
