Description:Sitka Cirque is looking to hire an aerial instructor to teach aerial silks, lyra, and trapeze to elementary aged kids, teens, and adults. Want to get away from the heat and bustle of the city for a year or two? Escape to the temperate rainforests of Southeast Alaska and come fly with us!Sitka is a small community with around 9,000 residents located on Baranof island. Sitka Cirque has become one of the most popular organizations in our small town since we started offering classes seven years ago. We have over 150 students and give them one or two chances to perform each year. More advanced students and instructors are given a number of opportunities to showcase their skills in Sitka, as well as in other communities. Our program has continued to grow, even throughout the pandemic and we are looking for an additional instructor who can work with beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Sitka is a beautiful place, nestled between the ocean and the mountains. Living here provides easy access to hiking, kayaking, camping, boating, hunting, fishing and more. When the weather permits, we set up our outdoor rig by the ocean, on mountain tops, or downtown. We use these opportunities for small shows, photo shoots, or just for fun! While it does rain a lot here (rainforest life), many of us find the proximity to nature worth getting our hair wet. If you want to start your day in a kayak with a thermos of coffee, paddling around pristine, untouched nature, Sitka might be the place for you! Wishing you had more time and space to train or develop choreography? Due to the structure of our program, most of our classes take place in the afternoon and evening. This means there are up to six hours a day in which the studio is available to instructors for their own use. Additionally, we try to bring guest teachers to town each year to offer our advanced students special workshops, and to continue the training and education of our instructors. We are lucky to have a large training space with 30 foot high ceilings and space for over a dozen silks or bars in use at a time. Part-time or full-time? Along with the aerial instructor position, we are looking to hire on more administrative help (registration, newsletters, etc). Both the admin roll and instructor roll are part-time, but if you are interested in a full-time position, we can make that work! Hours are flexible, you can go out for a morning hike, work on administrative tasks from home, then come in to teach afternoon/evening classes. Community minded! One of the main focuses of Sitka Cirque is to make joining the circus accessible to everyone, regardless of their strength or ability to afford classes. Over the years we have worked with the non-profit organization Friends of Sitka Circus Arts (FOSCA). Their mission statement is “to support Sitka Cirque in promoting wellness, creativity, and exploration within safe spaces and broaden the accessibility to and involvement in circus arts.” We have created a robust scholarship program through proceeds from our shows and other fundraising to accommodate anyone who wants to try our program.
