OVERVIEW

This summer (June–August 2026), Bard SummerScape returns with a vibrant season of dance, theater, opera, music, and the beloved Spiegeltent. Presented by the Fisher Center at Bard, this celebrated multi-arts festival takes place in person on Bard’s idyllic 1,000-acre campus, featuring performances in the stunning Frank Gehry-designed performing arts center.

The Video Engineer is part of the Video Team in the Production Department and supports the execution of video elements and needs for Bard SummerScape and the Bard Music Festival. They report to the Video Supervisor and work closely with other production team members and video/projection designers.

The Video Team at the Fisher Center is responsible for backstage video monitoring, on-stage projections, live streaming, and video recording for all performances during SummerScape and the Bard Music Festival. During show runs, the Video Engineer will serve as a camera operator, video playback operator, video crew head, video editor, or livestream engineer as needed. Outside of the show run, they will lead the video team in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and strike of all video equipment under the direction of the Video Supervisor.
This is a seasonal position from May 26 through August 19, non-exempt, paid hourly at a rate of $21–27 per hour, depending on experience. Hours will average 35–40 hours/week, with potential for overtime.
This position requires local residence during the dates listed above. Housing is provided as needed, beginning one day prior to the employment start date and ending at 10 a.m. on the day after the employment end date. Housing includes a single bedroom with shared amenities. Employees will have access to three (3) meals per weekday and two (2) meals per weekend day on campus during the residency period. Should campus dining agreements or options change, an equivalent per diem will be provided.
Please note: Room and board arrangements may differ for current Bard College students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace at all times.
Lead the video team in preparation, installation, operation, and maintenance of all video aspects of productions and special events under the direction of the Video Supervisor.
Act as backstage video crew for performances as needed.
Assist in training video crew members.
Update and create video paperwork.
Participate in technical rehearsals, performances, and production meetings.
Respond to video notes during rehearsals, performances, and work calls.
Provide support for all livestreams of SummerScape and Bard Music Festival performances.
Monitor livestreams as needed.
Facilitate recordings of rehearsals and performances.
Edit video content for livestreams and recordings of performances and rehearsals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE
Two years of professional experience in video playback and camera operation is preferred.
Experience with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects.
Experience with live streaming.
Experience in a leadership role.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of a variety of video signaling, camera, and display technologies.
Working knowledge of video playback.
Proficiency with general camera operation and backstage monitoring; training provided on SummerScape-specific equipment.
Basic knowledge of general theatrical production practices.
Strong attention to detail, general troubleshooting, and video engineering skills.
Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
Ability to read and understand scenic and construction drawings.
Ability to understand schematic drawings of video systems and update them as necessary.
Ability to work in an organized, self-directed, and detailed manner.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as determined by the production schedule.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
Ability to move and lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to push, pull, hang, reach, lean, and balance.
Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
Successful candidates possess strong communication skills, keen attention to detail, are collaborative and self-motivated, and bring a positive, can-do attitude.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with programming in WATCHOUT, Isadora, or QLab.
Working knowledge of vMix.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequently works at heights above 6 feet.
Frequently exposed to vibrations, noises, and electrical connections.
Frequently works in show conditions with theatrical and atmospheric elements including but not limited to haze, strobes, dim lights, loud sounds, dry ice, and more.
