Description:Rivertown Theaters seeks a proactive, hands-on Technical Director / Scenic Shop Manager to oversee production needs for our active year-round season. Operating two stages (a 300-seat proscenium with a fly system and a 180-seat cabaret-style house), we produce approximately 7 mainstage musicals/plays and 3 to 5 cabaret/children's shows annually.This is a full-time, year-round, in-person position reporting to the Artistic Director and Producers. Core Responsibilities: - Carpentry: Lead and perform hands-on construction, installation, and strike of all scenic elements. Build from plans: Translate technical drawings from designers into physical sets Rigging: Ensure safe rigging practices for scenery, lighting, and sound equipment. Change-overs: Plan and execute efficient transitions between productions. Shop + Facility Management - Personnel: Manage and schedule a crew of 2+ndash;4 carpenters and painters. Budgeting: Track shop expenses, manage receipts, and handle purchasing for all productions. Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep of both theatrical facilities, including tools, lighting/sound equipment, and stock inventory. Safety: Maintain a clean, organized workspace for all staff and patrons. Rentals: Coordinate scenery/prop rentals and staff technical positions for outside rental clients. Qualifications - Experience: 4+ years of professional scene shop management OR a Theater degree with 3+ years of professional experience. Technical Skills: expert knowledge of power/hand tools and structural scenery construction. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work comfortably on ladders or bucket lifts. Soft Skills: A positive, solution-oriented attitude under tight production deadlines. Logistics: Must live within commuting distance and have reliable transportation. - Preferred Skills (not required) - Welding and steel fabrication. - Scenic painting and finishing. - Familiar with Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or SketchUp; - Knowledge of ETC EOS lighting software and digital sound mixers. - Compensation + Hours Schedule: Primarily business hours; however, tech weeks or production delays may require evening/weekend effort. Stipends: Additional compensation is available for staff interested in taking on extra design (scenic/props) or backstage crew roles outside of regular hours.
