Our Scenic Maker Apprenticeship offers a hands-on training opportunity for those wishing to take their first steps towards a career in making scenic elements in the performing arts industry.
Job Description
A Scenic Maker is responsible for creating all aspects of stage scenery. usually this will be using timber but can also be other materials. They will realise the designer's vision by working from the construction drawings provided to build various pieces of set and props.
This is a full-time, vocational training programme following the Scenic Construction Technician apprenticeship qualification (Level 3).
This opportunity is especially relevant for individuals who may not have had access to the arts, or who are seeking an alternative route into theatre-including those who have faced barriers to entering or completing a university degree. Our apprenticeship is aimed at those who want to pursue a career in scenic making.
We will be holding an information session at the Rep from 4pm to 5pm on Friday 12th September.
Terms & Conditions
Period of Work: This is a fixed term 24-month apprentice contract, subject to successful completion of a probationary period of 3 months.
Pay: £18,200 per annum (i.e. £10 per hour based on a 35-hour week). This meets the National Minimum Wage for apprentices in the UK, and will increase to National Living Wage after 12 months in post if you are over 21 years old.
Hours: 35 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work will be required.
Holidays: 25 days per year plus bank holidays. The holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August each year.
Job Requirements
Have the right to work in the UK
Be 18 years or older at the start of the apprenticeship
Not have a degree in Technical Theatre or closely related subject
Be able to start in Birmingham from the beginning of October 2025 (or earlier).
An aptitude for learning new skills
Basic experience and skills in carpentry
Previous woodworking or carpentry experience (this can be in an education, local theatre group etc)
A strong interest and enthusiasm in creating scenic elements in theatre or performing arts
Good Team working skills
Good at practical or hands on tasks
Good problem solving skills and an inquisitive learner
Good verbal communication skills
Good punctuality and managing your schedule/workload
Ability to work at height
Physical capability of undertaking the requirement of the role. Reasonable adjustments will be considered as part of your application
Job Responsibilities
Gain hands-on experience working with wood-measuring, cutting, drilling, and assembling wood and other materials using various fixing methods to build scenic structures and frameworks safely.
Apply skills learnt in a practical workshop setting supporting the construction of set and props for Rep productions
Develop the ability to read and understand technical and construction drawings
Support the creation of stage scenery using a variety of techniques, materials, and finishes.
Assist in applying different surface treatments and materials to scenic elements as directed.
Attend external training and learning events as required.
Stay informed about new and evolving techniques, materials, and best practices in scenic construction.
Keep the workspace clean and safe, including performing routine machine maintenance and cleaning as instructed.
Help with the assembly and installation of scenic components.
