M&D Playhouse

United States United States, New Hampshire, North Conway
Posted on: Mar. 13, 2025

Description:

Job Description
The Producing Artistic Director (PAD) is responsible for leading M&D Playhouse (M&D) and our staff and volunteer team to fulfill M&D’s mission and vision by implementing educational and artistic programs, managing productions and year-round operations, and supporting growth through community building and fundraising. The PAD will work with the Board of Directors (BOD) to conceive, develop, and implement the artistic vision and focus of the theatre while working to balance the needs of the theatre, community, staff, volunteers, audience, press, sponsors, donors, and the BOD. The PAD will work to balance short-term financial needs and long-term financial goals by increasing fundraising and ticket sales.

The PAD will work with the BOD and the overall community to ensure that the programmatic and operational integrity and excellence of M&D continue and flourish. The PAD will represent M&D, develop relationships with community leaders, volunteers both existing and new, donors and funders as well as continue and create programs that engage the community and ensure the economic survival of the theatre.

The PAD will be hired and evaluated by the BOD, via the governance committee, to which he/she will be accountable. The PAD will organize and supervise the overall operations of the theatre including the administrative staff and volunteers, finance, fundraising, marketing, and facility management. In collaboration with the BOD and community stakeholders, the PAD will develop and implement a long-term strategic process and plan.

The PAD is also responsible for scheduling and implementing, with BOD guidance and feedback, programming activities and funding streams that maintain and improve the artistic and educational quality of the theatre in a fiscally responsible manner.

This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position with evening and weekend commitments during the year. We have one additional paid staff member and an ensemble of artist and theatre enthusiast volunteers who support the company’s mission. We are looking for a dynamic leader who has both organizational and artistic vision and the business skills to strategically execute that vision. Potential candidates should submit a cover letter, resume & references to [email protected].

In addition, the PAD is responsible for the day-to-day operations of M&D in such a manner that artistic responsibilities will not overshadow managing responsibilities by having the below skills and duties.

Desired Skills:

Leadership:
Drives the artistic/production portions of the mission/vision and leads staff and volunteers in daily operations. Collaborate with staff, volunteers and the BOD on strategic planning to support M&D’s mission and vision.

Community Engagement:
Represents M&D locally and regionally to enhance M&D’s brand awareness. Reaches out to local communities and theater groups to cultivate strategic partnerships. Builds a robust volunteer program to create opportunities for all willing members to participate and grow with the theatre.

Staff and Volunteer Management & Programming:
Supervises and manages volunteers and staff and the development and implementation of marketing campaigns, programs, events, and outreach.

Financial Planning:
Works with volunteers, staff, and the BOD to prepare an annual budget; approves expenditures within the authority delegated by the BOD; ensures sound business, bookkeeping, and accounting procedures; and provides the BOD with comprehensive and regular reports.

Season Planning:
Researches possibilities for productions and discusses ideas with the BOD and staff, and then selects the season of shows annually.

Artistic Excellence:
Oversees selection of all artistic personnel and provides mentoring and opportunities to ensure excellence and growth. Identifies and recruits playwrights, directors, actors, technical volunteers and others. Creates the opportunity for feedback from artistic staff and actors for each production and supplies that feedback to the BOD and integrates feedback into subsequent productions.

Development:
Fosters relationships with students and families, board members, major donors, sponsors, and foundations. Oversees, writes, and submits grant applications and reports.

Establish an annual budget and work with the Board Treasurer and BOD in the budget development and budget compliance processes.
Plan and select M&D’s season schedule including special events, house parties, and annual benefits.
In cooperation with the BOD, identify educational programs which would help to grow and strengthen M&D, and work to implement those programs.
Procure production rights to season plays and file royalty reports and payments in conjunction with the Board Treasurer and volunteer bookkeeper.
Serve as the lead fundraiser for the theatre – utilizing all board, volunteers, staff, members, and donors to promote giving opportunities and potential grants for the theatre and grow overall fundraising.
