DESCRIPTION
The Irvington Theater Director is responsible for the management and oversight of all cultural arts programming (including curated rentals and self-produced events) at the Irvington Theater.
Under the advisement of the Irvington Theater Commission, the Irvington Theater Director will produce diverse and engaging programming that appeals to a wide range of audiences and fosters cultural enrichment, exposure to the arts, and community involvement. The Director will collaborate closely with theater committees, performers, production teams, and administrative staff to create a curated season.
The Director will develop and implement strategic plans to enhance the theater’s reputation and visibility within the community and beyond. He/she will oversee marketing and promotional efforts to attract audiences, increase ticket sales, and enhance the theatre’s brand identity.
The Irvington Theater Director will be responsible for managing the theater’s financial operations, including budgets, financial reporting, and resource allocation, to ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
We are looking for an entrepreneurial professional who has meaningful experience in operating, programming, and fundraising for a theater. He or she should be connected to a network of agents and promoters within the regional theater community in the metropolitan area; have working knowledge of theatrical production including performers, stagehands, stage managers, lighting and sound technicians; the ability to negotiate rental agreements and contracts; the ability to attract and negotiate sponsorships for special events; the ability to meet and deal with the public and representatives of the media effectively; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with theater stakeholders, renters, donors, patrons, and municipal officials; and the ability to roll with the punches and be the dynamic face of our theater.
This position requires creativity, strong leadership, optimism and enthusiasm, flexibility, business acumen, attention to detail, and the ability to develop and implement innovative initiatives and relationships that keep the programs dynamic and meet the mission statement of the Irvington Theater: “To create a hub and home for local artists with a bridge to the professional talent of Manhattan; to create community and connection, and to expose the Rivertowns to the arts. “
Duties include:
• Attend monthly Commission and Village Board meetings.
• Recruit, train, and supervise theater staff.
• Prepare monthly reports (on budget and operating needs) for the Commission and periodic reports for the Village Board.
• Oversee the theater’s building condition and maintenance needs, including safety, security, and temperature, and keep the Commission apprised of the same.
• Schedule the use of the theater and maintain the master calendar.
• Oversee daily theater operations, including the preparation of the theater for performances by stagehands, as well as the inspection, maintenance, repair, and replacement of theater equipment by technicians.
• Inform rental groups of logistics, such as opening, load-in, load-out, closing, and securing the theater.
• Work with the Commission to address the theater’s facilities needs and manage maintenance and capital improvements.
• Maintain the theater email/mail list.
• Respond to correspondence, phone requests, and complaints about theater operations and programs.
• Use Excel, Word, calendar apps, e-mail, and database software.
• Negotiate and execute rental agreements and contracts (in consultation with the Commission) on behalf of the theater for uses consistent with the interests of the Village.
• Ensure the theater’s compliance with Village law and regulations.
• Supervise the collection and reporting of box office revenue from ticket sales.
• Prepare budget proposals for the theater in consultation and coordination with the Commission.
• Monitor and reconcile theater finances and accounts, including all transactions, budgets, and payroll.
Qualifications:
o 5-plus years in arts management or related field, plus connections within the theater community, ideally in the regional theater community
o Strong performing arts knowledge/background
o Experience planning events
o Experience handling budgets
o Strong track record working as a team
o Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends
