The Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency, now in its third edition, is an artistic capacity development programme at Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, supported by the National Arts Council of Singapore. This fully funded residency supports creative research in the contemporary performing arts by offering its residents time and space for artistic research, experimentation, development, research activities and opportunities for interdisciplinary and transcultural dialogues. The residency welcomes diverse modes and methodologies of inquiry and embraces a pluralistic approach to research that unfolds not only through the written word but also includes experiments with the body, performed moments and other non-traditional knowledge systems. Residents are not required to produce during or after their residency. Instead, they are expected to present at least one public program of their choice, developed in consultation with the Esplanade residency team. The stay lasts for one to three months and residents receive a stipend, access to a shared workspace, studios if needed, and accommodation and international travel to and from Singapore (if coming from overseas). There will be biennial open calls for applications for the residency and each edition will have a thematic focus designed to respond to current, critical societal issues.
