Head Electrician – Job Description

Location: Moore Theatre, Seattle, WA

Position Overview

The Head Electrician is employed for all shows and events requiring the use of the Electrics Department at the Moore Theatre. Events include Broadway-style productions, corporate events, dance performances, comedy shows, musical acts, and more.

This role works closely with the Stage Manager to ensure the safe operation of productions, supervise local crews, assign work, and collaborate with other stage departments to meet production needs. The Head Electrician must be willing and able to work with all departments as directed by the Stage Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(Other duties may be assigned.)

Core Responsibilities
Assist with offloading stage equipment from trucks, including trusses, lighting, road cases, video panels, cables, chain motors, set pieces, and related production equipment.
Push, pull, or carry equipment up to 200 feet from loading areas to staging areas (equipment is rolled whenever possible).
Supervise and assist the Electrics crew in setting up lighting systems, including:
Lighting consoles
Lighting instruments
Follow spots
Power distribution systems
Cabling and snakes
Ground-supported and set-mounted fixtures
High-voltage tie-ins
Support other departments as needed outside the Electrics Department.
Operate lighting cues in environments that may include low light, strobe effects, fog, and limited visibility.
Perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, and squatting.
Supervise strike (tear-down), packing, and load-out of lighting equipment; assist other departments as needed.
Read stage layouts and blueprints; coordinate with road crews to determine placement of sets, props, lighting, and sound equipment.
Serve as the primary operator of the house lighting console when a touring production does not provide an operator.
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
Working knowledge of theatrical lighting and electrical systems, including consoles, fixtures, cabling, dimmer systems, follow spots, and power distribution
Ability to safely use hand and power tools
Ability to work at heights
Strong attention to detail
Experience running shows and executing cues
General knowledge of stage carpentry, props, A/V, and sound systems
Ability to collaborate with house crew, overhire crew, road crew, and clients
Ability to follow direction from the Stage Manager and prioritize tasks accordingly
Leadership skills with the ability to manage crews of varying sizes
Flexibility to adapt to changing production needs and schedules
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
Ability to work safely and effectively under pressure and during long hours
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is an on-call, as-needed position with no guaranteed schedule. Hours vary depending on production needs. The role is physically demanding and requires:

Balancing, bending, carrying, climbing, crawling, reaching, squatting, twisting
Lifting up to 50 lbs independently
Pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs
Working long shifts (typically 10–12 hours; occasionally up to 16 hours)
Activity Breakdown
Standing (40%+): Loading/unloading equipment, setup, hanging lights, running cable
Walking (40%+): Transporting equipment (up to 250 ft across varied surfaces)
Sitting (up to 20%): Operating lighting console, show control, paperwork

Work surfaces may include concrete (finished/unfinished), gravel, uneven terrain, hardwood, linoleum, plywood, and carpet.
