SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Costume Design Instructor. The Costume Design Instructor will design and build up to two departmental theatre productions per semester and carry a 4/4 (four/four) course load, for eight courses per year, with release for up to two courses each semester for design and build assignments. The courses taught may include Costume Design, History of Fashion, Costume Construction 1 and 2, Stage Make-up, and other theatre classes.

The instructor will supervise, advise, and mentor students in the department, as well as assist in preparation for conference attendance, internships, and other professional situations. The instructor will also maintain and organize the costume shop, dressing rooms, and costume storage. The department houses two theatres (400-seat proscenium, black box with flexible seating), a costume shop, a scene shop, design studio, and various classroom facilities. Instructors are also required to perform service within the department and/or University at large, train student workers, and oversee practicum design students. Instructors are also required to maintain an active program of scholarship and/or creative activity.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:
Teaching (50%)

Teaches 4/4 course load, with up to two course releases per semester for design and build work
Teaches courses in Costume Construction 1 and 2, Stage Makeup, History of Fashion, Costume Design and other theatre classes
Oversees student practicums and capstones, as needed
Engages in experiential and hands-on instruction
Contributes to the educational values of the University and the Department
Service (30%)
Provides service to the department, University, community, and profession
Engages in enrollment and retention initiatives
Attends University events
Advises students
Maintains and organizes costume shop, dressing rooms, and costume storage
Designs, sources, and builds costumes for departmental productions. Execute and deliver designs and deliverables on schedule. Work with design team on costume properties and the maintenance and repair of costumes during the run of the productions
Participates in all tech week preparations and rehearsals as well as all design and production meetings
Works with the producer and director to create, manage, and maintain production schedules, budgeted and actual costs, for costumes
Maintains and organizes costume shop, dressing rooms and costume storage
Scholarship and Creative Activity (20%)
Engages in scholarship and/or creative activity suitable per the University APT guidelines
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:

MFA in Costume Design or a related field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
Minimum of three years of teaching and designing experience in a college or university setting
Excellence in communicating artistic intentions for the costumes and the collaborative choices of the production team in sketches and renderings through professional design portfolio and/or website
Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate rehearsals, performances, auditions, including production load-in, build and strike and other departmental and University activities
Ability to work and collaborate effectively with artists and technicians in a variety of professional and academic settings
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of the related production design areas—projection design, scenic design, lighting design, sound design – as well as knowledge of movement for acting, dance, and stage combat and their related costume requirements
Knowledge of financial management of costume build, acquisitions, and maintenance
Interest in being a vital partner in building the next generation of our program as well as an open and collaborative individual positively engaged in the department’s mission and values
Knowledge of the materials and methods of costume construction and design – including rendering, patterning, draping, and garment construction, as well as the ability to use standard tools and equipment for costume construction
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Work Schedule:

40 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm
