Duties

The Audio Engineer will be responsible for overseeing all sound-related aspects of a production, from planning and installation through operation and maintenance. The role ensures that the audio design is executed accurately, safely, and consistently throughout the run.

Collaborating with the Sound Designer, Director, and Production Manager to realize the sound design

Reviewing sound plots, system designs, cue sheets, and technical requirements

Coordinating microphone needs and system logistics

Supervising the installation, tuning, and testing of sound systems

Overseeing microphone placement, wiring, and signal flow

Troubleshooting system issues during setup, tech and performances

Supporting sound programming and cueing during technical rehearsals

Mixing performances or supervising A1/A2 operators (depending on production needs)

Supervising strike and load-out of audio equipment

Ensuring proper storage, return, or transport of gear

Managing sound notes and implementing changes from the designer or director

Maintaining and repairing microphones, consoles, speakers, and cabling


Key Skills & Qualifications

Minimum two (2) years of technical theatre sound experience in educational, community, or professional productions

Experience operating and programming digital mixing consoles, specifically a Behringer X32 (32-channel) mixer or similar system

Knowledge of microphone types, wireless systems, signal flow, and speaker system setup

Ability to interpret sound plots, system diagrams, cue sheets, and patch lists

Experience installing and maintaining microphones, cabling, speakers, and playback systems

Ability to mix live theatrical performances with multiple wireless microphones and playback cues

Strong troubleshooting ability during rehearsals and performances

Familiarity with QLab or other theatrical audio playback software preferred

Strong collaboration skills with Sound Designers, Stage Managers, and Production Staff

Understanding of safe audio practices, cable management, and equipment maintenance
