The Rep are looking for an Assistant Director for our upcoming co-production of A Thousand Splendid Suns by Ursula Rani Sarma adapted from the novel by Khaled Hosseini and directed by Roxana Silbert which opens at Birmingham Rep Theatre in April 2025 before visiting Nottingham Playhouse and Leeds Playhouse.

About the Production

Birmingham Rep, Nottingham Playhouse & Leeds Playhouse presents a powerful new production of A Thousand Splendid Suns by Ursula Rani Sarma, Khaled Hosseini's spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner, Directed by Roxana Silbert.

In 1992 in an Afghanistan ravaged by war, an orphaned Laila is left alone in an increasingly threatening world. Her older neighbour Rasheed is quick to open his home and takes Laila as his second wife. Rasheed's first wife Mariam has no choice but to accept her younger, and now pregnant, rival. As the Taliban take over, life for all of them becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, and the two women find themselves unlikely allies.

Fee

Fees are paid in line with UK Theatre/Equity rates for MRSL Grade 1:

£3,900 to cover all work delivered during prep, rehearsals and tech until the press performance at The Rep on a full-time basis.
An additional 4 days at £125 per day plus travel & accommodation expenses for the transfer & opening at Nottingham Playhouse and Leeds Playhouse (2 days at each venue).
Total fee = £4,400.

Job Requirements
Person Specification

Essential criteria:

A keen interested in Directing, with interest in pursuing a career in Directing in their future.

Experience of working as an Assistant Director on at least 1 other production, or experience in a role with relevant transferrable skills
For this role, we are looking for applicants who can share a cultural knowledge and understanding of the Afghan community; therefore we welcome applications from those with Afghani heritage
Right to work in the UK.

Job Responsibilities
Role and Responsibilities:

Supporting the Director through the rehearsal process, actors with line learning, running research as required and aiding the smooth running of the production
Support the requirements of the rehearsal room to note take, delivering written and video records of progress, and other tasks as requested
Support the creative, producing and technical teams to ensure effective and efficient lines of communication between departments
Support the smooth delivery of accessible performances during the run and the smooth-running of press, marketing and educational events associated with the production.
Taking an active role in contributing to the good welfare of the company, helping to build a creative and accessible environment in which everyone is empowered to do their best work
Other reasonable duties to aid the smooth running of the production
