Jugglers, Clowns and Fliers - Stories from 250 Years of Circus - Performing Arts Events - StageLync
In partnership with Norwich City Council and part of Circus 250. Jugglers, Clowns and Fliers looks at the lives of some of Norwich's forgotten circus families.
Discover local performers such as “The Norwich Clown” Bob Anderson who took his elephant Rami Jami to Sandringham to entertain the Prince of Wales. Another well known figure was Pablo Fanque, a circus proprietor born in Norwich as William Darby and immortalised by the Beatles in their song ‘For the Benefit of Mr Kite’.
You'll also hear the tale of James and Millicent Evans, the Norwich born foot-jugglers, who took their skills to America before marriage broke up the act and tragedy put a halt to James’s plan to own a circus of his own in Mexico.
The exhibition also tells the tragic story of how the daughter of one of the famous Sanger Circus brothers lost her life in the bombing of the Norwich Hippodrome in April 1942.
