Gossamer Thread’s 250 Years of Circus in 60 Minutes - Performing Arts Events - StageLync
In 1768 Philip Astley paced out a circle on the banks of the Thames in which to perform tricks on horseback. 250 years later, the standard circus ring remains the same size, and that moment is recognised as the birth of modern circus.
In this brand new contemporary circus show featuring world-class international artists, Gossamer Thread Circus invite you on a journey traversing the myriad evolutions of circus in its various and varied permutations, in this the 250th anniversary of its birth.
It all began with a ring…

The show is supported by Arts Council England, Norwich Arts Centre, Seachange Arts & Jacksons Lane London.
The creative producer and founder of Gossamer Thread Circus (previously Gossamer Thread Vaudeville Co. and purveyors of Gossamer Thread’s Curious Cabaret) is Daisy Black. Alongside her performance career, she spent 6 years researching and writing a novel about Philip Astley which she began during her time on the Creative Writing MA at the University of East Anglia.
