Cherche - Trouve A Masterclass with Lân Maurice Nguyễn - Performing Arts Events - StageLync
National Institute of Circus Arts in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne for Asia TOPA 2020 is offering a rare opportunity for circus artists to take a masterclass with Vietnamese Bamboo Circus Artistic Director Lân Maurice Nguyễn. Lân Maurice is visiting Melbourne with the acclaimed Nouveau Cirque du Vietnam who will present À Ố Làng Phố as part of Asia TOPA 2020.
Lân Maurice Nguyễn trained at the National Circus School in Vietnam throughout his childhood and performed for Cirque Plume in France, before becoming Artistic Director of circus academy Arc en Cirque in France. With his brother Nhất Lý Nguyễn and former Cirque du Soleil performer and choreographer Tuân Lê he co-founded Nouveau Cirque du Vietnam, drawing inspiration from Vietnamese culture and traditional way of life. He has worked as artistic and training director on the group’s first widely acclaimed production Làng Tôi (My Village) and subsequent productions À Ố Làng Phố and Teh Dar.
Cherche – Trouve (search and find) is a creation methodology developed by Lân Maurice that seeks out the right questions to develop and refine work. Cherche - Trouve will equip artists with techniques to help avoid repeating existing forms and to discover original forms of circus artistry drawn from their own unique lived experience.
The workshop will be in two parts with Creation Tools as an introduction to the Cherche – Trouve methodology and Research Tools as a deeper exploration of the methodology. Participants are welcome to attend either one or both parts.
Part 1: Creation Tools (Saturday 22 February)
Attendees are asked to bring existing material, fully developed sequences or work in the later stages of development. This is a practical session designed to strengthen the outcome of devised work. It will focus on body skills and technical realisation as well as explore emotion, sensitivities and artistic approaches.
Part 2: Research Tools (Saturday 29 February)
Participants will focus on theoretical aspects of the approach, applying new tools to challenge their own research and development process. Participants will experiment with new tools, apply the methodology to their research approach, expand the range of responses available to them in the research stage, and analyse the impact on their individual creation process.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS:
Participants from a variety of disciplines are welcome. This workshop is pitched at a level appropriate for professional circus performers and artists enrolled in or graduated from tertiary circus training.
Please come prepared with a well-developed circus act to work on. You can bring your own apparatus and equipment, or NICA may be able to provide you with apparatus or equipment. Please get in touch with us after booking to arrange apparatus requirements.
