Celebrating Sanger - Performing Arts Events - StageLync
Join us in celebrating Newbury's circus roots this summer.
As part of Circus 250, a national anniversary programme celebrating 250 years of British Circus, Newbury commemorates the life and times of the famous impresario 'Lord' George Sanger, who was born in the town.

George Sanger was one of England's most successful showmen - attracting thousands of people to his spectacles, staging extravagant parades and performing for royalty and dignitaries. A colourful character and consummate entertainer, Sanger was a legend in his own lifetime. Although Sanger left Newbury for a life on the road, the statue of Queen Victoria he bequeathed to the town still stand in the local park.

70 YEARS A SHOWMAN
Working with West Berkshire Museum and the National Fairground and Circus Archive, we present a glimpse into the life of Sanger and the world of Victorian performers, travelling fairs and British circus past and present.

Amongst artefacts specially chosen for this exhibition there will be remarkable photos of Sanger’s circus never before shown in the UK. Look out also as the exhibition spills over into the street and images find their way into all corners of the town…
