WORKSHOPS:
LINGUISTICS & NAMING HISTORY IN VERTICAL AERIALS with Elsie Smith
May 28 from 9-11 am
Vertical Arts, especially aerial fabric and sling, began their journey as an art form accessible to the general public in North America in the 1980's. We'll look at how the codification of naming and teaching linguistics helped move the traditional circus acts of corde lisse and Spanish web to the current popular forms. Who 'invented' aerial fabric? Where did the name "belay" come from? And who and what is a "Pfister Twister"? This workshop will start as a presentation and then we'll all share names and regionalisms to help us learn each other's languages.
VIRTUAL OPTION: Can't join us in person? Sign up and get the recording to watch later!

VERTICAL THEORY & VARIABLES: An Informed Approach Toward Researching and Creating in the Air with Jamie Hodgson
May 28 from 1:30-3:30 pm
We'll use riddles to unlock how wraps can be deconstructed and reconstructed in new ways to free your choreography and create limitless possibilities. A brain-teasing good time!

RETROGRADE REFLECTIONS: Reverse is the New Regular! with Molly Graves
May 28 from 4-6 pm
This workshop is a retrospective on retrogrades! Get ready to challenge your vertical brain as we reverse and invert our wraps and our way of thinking about them! A portion of this workshop will explore the fascinating world of Indian rope mallakhamb, including unique wraps, toe climb theory and how various hand grips (and toe grips!) are related and connected. Previous experience with toe climbs is not required, and modified toe-friendly variations will also be offered, as well as starting points for training your toes!

SLING PUZZLES with Lauren Breunig
May 29 from 10 am - 12 pm
Have you ever had the thought, “I am a skilled aerialist on another apparatus; I feel like sling should make more sense than it does….” In this workshop, we will demystify the fabric loop and explore ways of creating choreography using theory puzzles and applying knowledge from other disciplines. No sling experience is required, but you must have a strong background on another aerial apparatus. Those with sling experience are also welcome!

ROTATIONAL DROPS ON FABRIC & ROPE with Julia Langenberg
May 29 from 1-3 pm
Knowing how to control your drops on fabric and rope is essential in training and performing safely. We’ll break down the technique needed in forward, backward, and sideways rotations, look at fundamental conditioning exercises to aid in building body awareness throughout your rotations in the air. And we'll play with the theory of wraps!
