of CIRQUE JEUNESSE EN ÉQUIIBRE
An explosion of colour, movement and music, SABALI! is a dynamic circus and African arts troupe that offers interactive street and stage performances, roving performances as well as workshops in circus and African dance. Since 2013, the troupe is co directed by multidisciplinary circus artist, West African dancer, percussionist and social circus instructor, CJE’s founder Mamoudou Diallo originally from Burkina Faso and Canadian born, long-time student and seasoned performer of West African dance and percussion, founding member of CJE Allison Griffith.
SABALI! currently collaborates with other high calibre professional artists from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Conakry and Haiti.
SABALI!’s work has been presented across Canada (where they are based), from Vancouver Island to Montreal and in as far off places as Iasi, Romania.
SABALI! was created as a platform for artistic and social expression as well as a vehicle for promoting awareness of the projects of CIRQUE JEUNESSE EN ÉQUILIBRE. Founded in 2010 by Mamoudou Diallo, CIRQUE JEUNESSE EN ÉQUILIBRE is a non-profit social circus project which uses circus arts as a means of social intervention among disadvantaged youth in Houndé, Burkina Faso.
5% of all proceeds generated by SABALI! go towards CIRQUE JEUNESSE EN ÉQUILIBRE’s project in Burkina Faso.
L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE
L’Union Fait la Force (Strength in Unity) is an interactive, action packed circus and African arts show that comes with a message. The show consists of a colourful display of acrobatics, African dance and percussion, juggling, unicycling and a djembe playing stilt walker all rolled into one. This unique show introduces the African proverb after which it is named to promote values of cultural diversity and unity. Fun and learning for the whole family!
ROVING PERFORMANCES
Burkinabe circus artist Mamoudou Diallo playfully roves the festival grounds on unicycle, on Penny Farthing bicycle or on stilts with interludes of juggling and acrobatics dressed in a variety of charming costumes, including one surprise!
Mamoudou’s roving performances are also available in duo format or with live musical accompaniment by SABALI!’s percussionists.
CIRCUS WORKSHOPS
Discover your inner circus artist when Mamoudou Diallo introduces the basics of juggling, flower sticks, diabolo, Chinese plates, poi, and rolla bolla.
This workshop is available with or without live musical accompaniment by SABALI!’s percussionists.
WEST AFRICAN DANCE WORKSHOPS WITH LIVE PERCUSSION
Learn high-energy and joyous dance moves when the artists of SABALI! lead participants in the basic movements of neo traditional West African dances. Good for the body, mind and soul!
CIRCUS CORNER
Circus corner offers festivalgoers a casual setting in which to try their hand at a variety of circus arts including, unicycle, rolla bolla, Penny Farthing bicycle, and a variety of forms of juggling under the direction of multidisciplinary circus artist Mamoudou Diallo from Burkina Faso.
